DID CONTE WANT LUIZ?

Jamie Carragher reckons it’s the Chelsea hierarchy and not Antonio Conte who was behind the buy of David Luiz.

In the view of Carragher, there is never a surety over a Blues’ coach remaining in the office for the next season. Whoever is in that job can be slapped a sack anytime and that’s why they actually don’t leave it on the coach to buy someone and rather people sitting up on the top themselves decide who to buy. So, it was not a case of Conte wanting Luiz and buying him, it was rather a case of the hierarchy buying him and handing him over to Conte.

The reason Carragher believes Conte would not have asked for Luiz himself was that the 47-year old doesn’t want the defenders to perform the role Luiz performs.

As per Carragher, Conte has always preferred the defensive players who are bothered about defending only and nothing else. But, Luiz’s play is not only about defence and that’s why he is not well suited to Conte and the Italian had not come to Stamford Bridge with Luiz on his radar. If he had, he would have made the negotiations for Luiz much before and the signing would have happened much before, but, it only happened in the last hours of the window. Taking a punt on Luiz is a bit like when you play the latest slots, with the transfer possibly helping Chelsea win big, but more likely ending up costing them.

Carragher does not see Luiz in the backline of Chelsea going forward and suspects his place to go to John Terry once the retired English Footballer heals up.

Terry had hurt his leg a few days back and while it was not found out to be a tear, it still needed some rest. So, he had to give the Liverpool game a miss, but, he should be healed up by the coming Saturday.
