Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool can make huge statement at Old Trafford

Liverpool legend-turned-pundit Jamie Carragher believes his former team can make a huge statement by getting a positive result against arch-rivals Manchester United this month. The Reds are currently equal on points with league leaders Manchester City at the top but they are trailing them on virtue of goal difference.

Still, they can catch up during the forthcoming gameweek where they have a game in hand versus Manchester United. Speaking to Sky Sports, the ex-Reds captain stated that every fixture remains crucial for the rest of the campaign, although the game at Old Trafford could prove crucial to their quest of securing a maiden Premier League crown.

He said: “It’s very important, probably Liverpool’s most difficult remaining fixture. Man City have to go there as well. We don’t have to win, but if we win there it sends a massive message. Not just to Man City, but it’s a big statement to everyone. That would be a little blow to City, because it is that fixture that both sides are wondering if the other could lose or draw. It’s a huge game, but there’s 12 left. Every one of them is massive.”

“Liverpool currently have a free weekend after their ouster from the FA Cup and Jurgen Klopp has decided to make the most of the period“ with a warm weather training camp in Marbella. Thereafter, they have a testing midweek Champions
“League clash against Bayern“ Munich at Anfield and the game could prove tricky with just one fit central defender at the manager’s disposal.

Joe Gomez has already been sidelined after his recent operation for a leg fracture but he won’t be the sole centre-back to miss the game with Virgil van Dijk suspended while Dejan Lovren remains a huge doubt with the recent hamstring concern. As such, Klopp could be forced to feature midfielder Fabinho alongside Joel Matip and it remains to be seen whether the duo can keep out the Bayern threat. Afterwards, they have the much-anticipated league clash against United on the road.
