Jamie Carragher Expects Emre Can to Leave Liverpool in the Summer

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher says that he expects midfielder Emre Can to leave Liverpool in the summer.

There has been plenty of rumours surrounding the future of the 23-year-old, who is out of contract in the summer of 2018. Even though contract negotiations have started between Liverpool and Emre Can, the midfielder has reportedly asked for wages of around £ 100,000 per week. Liverpool have pulled off the negotiations as a result of being uncertain if the player is worth this extravagant figure. Emre Can does not have a problem even if Liverpool do not come in with a new offer.

There has been plenty of interest surrounding the 23-year-old – especially from Italian champions Juventus. Carragher reckons that one of the big problems with Liverpool being hesitant on this extravagant new contract is that the player is not versatile enough to be demanding this extravagant figure.

Even though the player has been utilised in a number of roles since joining Liverpool, Carragher says that Can’s best position appears to be the holding midfielder role. Since Jordan Henderson has been able to make this position as his own in recent years, the club are well stocked in terms of quality. This has meant that manager Jurgen Klopp has been utilising Can in a number of roles.

“Can's big problem is that I don't think he's a versatile player but he's played in four or five positions for Liverpool. The only position I think he can play is the one he played [against Burnley], the sitting midfielder, because he needs legs around him. [Klopp] is playing Jordan Henderson ahead of him. He's got a contract situation at the moment, Emre Can. Is he going to sign it? Is he not? I think he may have 12 months at the end of the season,” said Carragher.
