Carragher Disappointed with José Mourinho’s Approach against Liverpool
Jamie Carragher expressed his disappointment at the way Manchester United played in the recent goalless draw with archrivals Liverpool.
Much was expected of this encounter on Monday night, but it turned out to be a disappointing display from both teams. However, it was largely as a result of Manchester United setting up shop and being happy with a point. Carragher says that he this is not the way a club like Manchester United should approach a big game. However, he admits the fact that José Mourinho is unlikely to change his management style, which has been hugely rewarding over the last decade.
Mourinho has now overseen his worst possible league start in his entire career after taking only 14 points from their opening eight matches. It is also two points less than the return of Louis van Gaal’s second season. Mourinho came to the club with a huge reputation even though it may have suffered following poor spells at Chelsea and Real Madrid. After having tasted a lot of successes, Mourinho would be fair to think that he is right in his approach. Carragher, though, says that United should not have played with such a defensive attitude. Mourinho did not admit to parking the bus, but he claimed that it is a result that suits the Red Devils since it is away from home.
"That performance tonight I wouldn't expect from a Manchester United team, especially in the second half with how defensive it was. But you'd expect it from a Jose Mourinho team. I don't think there's anyone better in world football as a manager at nullifying the opposition. But will Manchester United fans be frustrated how defensive they were second half? No one is going to change Jose Mourinho, I think even the board and supporters will have to accept that,” said Carragher.
