Jamie Carragher urges Liverpool to strengthen frontline
Liverpool great Jamie Carragher believes his former club can challenge for the Premier League title on a regular basis, if they can improve the options in the final third of the pitch. Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino have been excellent for Jurgen Klopp over the course of the campaign but Carragher feels the club require another wide player to reduce the burden on the attacking trident.
Speaking exclusively to Goal.com, he said: “You have to be concerned. I thought the squad was very good at the start of the season, but I think what it lacks is cover for the front three. When one of them misses out, the quality coming in is not enough. [Naby] Keita will add quality to the midfield, but I think we do still lack a little bit since [Philippe] Coutinho went in terms of that final pass. Defensively we’re fine in terms of numbers, but I think we need something more in the final third.”
Recent reports have associated Liverpool with a summer move for Lyon skipper Nabil Fekir but his father has since refuted claims over a possible agreement between the clubs. As such, the Reds are still continuing on their search for probable additions and they have a significant budget to do so after the £146m sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in January.
Liverpool ended their league campaign with a final day victory over Brighton & Hove Albion and this ensured that they finished in the top-four for the second season on the bounce. Now the team’s focus is expected to entirely lie on their Champions League final against Real Madrid on May 26 and the preparations are already underway with Klopp having taken his side to a training camp in Marbella. Liverpool have recently found relief in the injury front with Adam Lallana returning to full fitness and Emre Can could do the same ahead of the final in Kiev.
