NO MORE VAN DIJK EXCUSE – CARRAGHER
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has revealed that the Reds can't continue to make the Virgil Van Dijk excuse for a poor season in the Premier League. Liverpool have been very poor in the past two months in the league thereby wasting the opportunity to defend their title. Jamie Carragher and other Liverpool fans were in cloud nine last summer as the Reds ended their long wait for a league title. Liverpool had not won a league title for three decades until last summer when that title drought ended. Liverpool started the season well and were at the top of the table for long periods even after the unfortunate Virgil Van Dijk injury during the Merseyside Derby in October 2020. The Reds were at the summit for several weeks before they imploded in recent weeks.
Dutchman Virgil Van Dijk had initially handed Liverpool a big blow in their quest for to win the Premier League title for a second consecutive season. Van Dijk suffered a serious knee injury from the tackle made by Everton shot stopper Jordan Pickford in the first half of the Merseyside Derby mentioned above. The injury ruled him out for the rest of the season initially but Liverpool fans are still hopeful that the Dutch international will play again before the season ends in a few months’ time.Liverpool coped well with the loss of Van Dijk to injury until recently when the Reds began the recent poor run.
Liverpool hit a new low at the weekend when they were beaten in the Merseyside Derby in the league for the first time since 2010.Richarlison and GylfiSigurdsson (penalty) scored the goals for the Toffees. It was the first away win over Liverpool for Everton in almost 22 years. Liverpool have now lost their last four games at home in the league. In his post-match reaction to the Everton game in the Merseyside Derby, ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports that Liverpool need to stop making excuses about the Virgil Van Dijk injury and that the focus should be on getting back to form in the Premier League.
