Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has stoked the rivalry with Manchester United after he stated in his column for the Daily Telegraph that the club re-signed Cristiano Ronaldoafter they learnt of the interest from city rivals Manchester City. Liverpool and Manchester United share a big rivalry as the top two teams in English football.

Ex-Liverpool central defender Jamie Carragher enjoyed several wins against the Red Devils during his playing career. According to him, Manchester United didn't plan to re-sign Ronaldo this summer if not for the interest shown by Manchester City. On Ronaldo, Manchester United had to negotiate an initial transfer fee of £12.9m with Italian Serie A club Juventus plus £7.9m in add-ons to seal his return to Old Trafford. He would have joined the Premier League champions if not for the timely intervention from Manchester United. He has been a regular source of goals for the Red Devils since he returned to the club. The Portugal national team skipper has four goals in all competitions over the course of 270 minutes (three games). In Premier League terms, he has three goals in two matches ahead of the home clash with Aston Villa. Ronaldo and his Manchester United teammates take on Villa at home in one of the first two games as far as the next set of Premier League matches is concerned. The mammoth clash between hosts Chelsea and Manchester City takes place alongside the aforementioned United game.
