Joe Gomez could make England World Cup squad on current form
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher feels Joe Gomez has the opportunity of making the England World Cup squad, should he maintain his performances for the Reds over the course of the campaign. The youngster has been a regular fixture in Jurgen Klopp's side this term and has started the last six Premier League games on the trot.
In a report covered by The Liverpool Echo, Carragher insists that Gomez has the chance of keeping his Three Lions spot if he carries on in the same vein of form, he said: "He’s come in at right-back and at first he was chopping and changing with Trent [Alexander-Arnold], but now it looks like he’s got the shirt at this moment. And long may that continue for him because it looks like Gareth Southgate, from an England point of view, is going to give young players a chance. A performance like that puts him in a great position, I think, going forward with the World Cup in the summer."
Gomez made his debut for England earlier this month where he came on as a first-half substitute for Phil Jones in a 0-0 draw versus Germany. The versatile defender was therein offered a start against Brazil, where he put in another resolute display in a 0-0 result.
Aside from Gomez, Southgate also offered opportunities to the likes of Tammy Abraham and Ruben Loftus-Cheek with the latter grabbing the attention during the Germany friendly. The Chelsea loanee imposed himself on the reigning World Champions, and he has already tipped by pundits to make the cut for next summer's finals in Russia.
Meanwhile, Gomez has recently earned plaudits from Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, who feels the Englishman could make a highly successful career while staying put at Anfield. The 20-year-old has begun to show his old form after a knee injury in his early career, and the club's faithful will hope that remains unscathed through the season.
